Just Because You’re Offended Doesn’t Mean You’re Right

just because you're offended

For all the talk about HR Business Partners and A Place at the Table, the truth is there’s an element of anachronistic HR that could just as easily be called the Offended Employees Department.

It’s the people you go to when you don’t like someone. Or what they said. Or how they drink their coffee. Or how they talk on the phone. Or when they get to work. Or when they leave. Or when they take their break.

That kind of thing. Let’s be honest, it’s titillating to hear people bitch. Every once in a while they have a legitimate complaint. But more often than not there’s merit in what Ricky Gervais said: Just because you’re offended doesn’t mean you’re right.

Your job in the Offended Employees Department is knowing the difference between what’s legit and what’s whining. You can’t be a business partner until you know when you’re getting the business.
