Year of the Cubicle and the Death of ROWE at Best Buy

Last week it was Yahoo! This week it’s Best Buy.

In Chinese culture, they started The Year of the Snake. In Management culture, we started The Year of the Cubicle.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports in an article titled Is Best Buy Right to End Work-from-Home Program? that Best Buy’s CEO “wanted to return accountability to the corporate culture.”

On Monday, Best Buy announced an end to its innovative ROWE (Results-Only Work Environment) flexible-schedule program. Soon most corporate employees will work from headquarters in Richfield, just as Yahoo workers have been called back to the home office.

Oops. I guess out of sight, out of mind is true for Best Buy managers. Absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder.

Best Buy can rename ROWE to COW (cubicle-only work). I have a recruiting ad idea for them: How now, yellow COW?
