Your Search for the Best Performance Management System is Like a Drunk Looking for His Keys Under a Lamp Post

A policeman sees a drunk man searching for something under a streetlight and asks what the drunk has lost. He says he lost his keys and they both look under the streetlight together. After a few minutes the policeman asks if he is sure he lost them here, and the drunk replies, no, that he lost them in the park. The policeman asks why he is searching here, and the drunk says, “This is where the light is.”

Why do you keep looking around for the best performance management system?

Why do you keep thinking you’re just one 9-box/5-point/mobile PM system away from nailing it?

Why do you think that the latest trend in performance management is better than the last 20 versions?

And where are you looking?

Under a lamp post?

Performance management was lost a long time ago.

And if you really want to look for it, consider this:

Maybe if it was lost so long ago it shouldn’t be found.

Maybe what you’re looking for isn’t there.

Maybe it’s time to think about dumping performance management.

Get a new set of keys.

Replace PM with good-old management.

Old school walking around and helping people.

And that doesn’t cost a thing.
