Good Communication Goes Below the Surface

On the surface, organizational communication looks easy. Heck, everyone with a Twitter account is touting themself as a communication guru at HR conferences.

Good luck with that.

They’re like the disembodied heads on Easter Island.

Where’s the rest?

Good communication goes below the surface. It requires you to look deep — then to summarize. To know the whole story. To think about what people are thinking when they think about your company. Examining only the surface is easy — but it’s cheap and lazy. And it’s why lots of employees say they want better communication.

What they’re looking for isn’t more cuteness. They’re looking for context.
