The First Rule of Editing Is: You Don’t Talk About Editing

If you don’t know what you want, you end up with a lot you don’t.Chuck Palahniuk

The essence of excellent editing is knowing where you’re going.

Knowing the story you want to tell.

How you want to get there with the fewest best-est words.

Happy/glad edits don’t advance the narrative.

They just prove that you have a red pen.

One thing to remember…

The first rule of editing is: You don’t talk about editing.

You write your edits down.

As Elvis Costello said: Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.

The same goes for your edits.

They’re edits.

Not therapy.
