Where Was HR When Fired Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz Sent That Note to All Employees?

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz was fired yesterday. The company’s Board said it was for lack of performance. The former CEO didn’t take it well and fired off an all employee email before she left:

That’s the note she sent out according to this story on Masahable. The CEO wrote:

To all,

I am very sad to tell you that I’ve just been fired over the phone by Yahoo’s Chairman of the Board. It has been my pleasure to work with all of you and I wish you only the best going forward.

Um…would you put up with that kind of note being sent out to all employees from anyone else? (The “wishing you only the best” part is fine but the “fired over the phone” part seems designed to ding the Chairman.) Then why the deposed CEO? And I wonder, where was Yahoo’s head of HR in this one? I know it was a Board decision, but why wouldn’t there have been a coordination of timing? At least IT could have put a hold on all-employee emails just so this kind of embarrassment didn’t happen.

I might be naive about this, but sending angry notes to all employees, whether you’re a just-fired CEO or a wet-behind-the-ears mail clerk, is a bad career decision.

Real time note: I was looking up the management team at Yahoo just out of curiosity. And here’s a screenshot of their management page this morning as of 8:36 a.m. EST. It still has Carol Bartz as CEO. Wouldn’t you think someone somewhere would have said, “Hey, maybe we should change our management team page?”

I guess Carol Bartz won’t have a tribute made for her like the fans of Apple CEO Steve Jobs did in this embedded video.
