Making Connections in the Real World

You know what gets my attention on the Market-Frankford El? An old guy jutting his icky, calloused foot out into the aisle.

I saw the movement out of the corner of my eye. And there it was in all its yellow, curled toenail glory. I looked at it. And shuddered.

Across the way I saw a woman laughing at my reaction. We made eye contact. Held our hands up to our mouths and shared a laugh. Together. But apart.

We spent the next two stops looking back at Yellow Toe and then at each other. We would laugh again. And again.

When I got off my stop at 2nd Street I waved. She waved back. And we laughed one last time.

That’s making connections. All the Google+ and Facebook and Twitter in the world can’t do what a shared moment can do: Make real connections.
