Do they whine at the little things?

Do they cry when they can’t see you?

Do they scream to high heavens at the slightest things?

No, not your kids. Your employees.

If you’re in HR, you know them. They’re the employees who “won’t go to sleep.” They cry for everything. Where’s my insurance? Why can’t I get a promotion? Why doesn’t he like me?

It’s Time to Ferberize.

If you know parents, each has a story of bringing up baby. And it ain’t pretty doing without sleep for months on end. Enter Dr. Richard Ferber and what some call the “cry it out” method of getting kids to sleep. In an interview with Parenting Magazine, Ferber says he encourages, “gradual extinction, where you delay your response time to your baby’s wakings.”

The same approach can be taken with restless employees. I’m not recommending that you don’t deal with the real issues. But the silly ones? The “I’m going to HR every day” types. Feberize them. Don’t give in.

Until you get some sleep, you won’t be able to do your day job. Yeah, that’s HR.

Um, if Ferberizing doesn’t work you can always read them this bedtime story:
