There’s a Thin Man Living Inside You

“There’s a thin man living inside you.”

That’s what my son, Steve, said to me last night when I was talking about cutting some major weight to run the Chicago and Philadelphia Marathons this year.

It was startling to me.

Why it caught me off guard is because I used to glibly say to my boys, “There’s a fat man living inside you” when they would talk about how skinny they were and how no matter what they ate, they never put on a pound.

Well, they’re grown up. All in terrific shape. So I’m bringing up the rear in my family. (Ba-da-bum!) I started running this year just to see if I could do it. And so far I have. I’ve run three 5Ks, a 5-miler, and a 10-miler. That’s going from not running at all 16 weeks ago to this. And I’m running a 10K Mud Run in June and another in July. I’m riding with TEAM IFRACTAL in the 150-mile MS City to Shore. And besides the two marathons this fall, I’m going to squeeze in the Philly Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon. (Yeah, I’m staying for the Bret Michaels concert.)

That’s a lot. But the interesting thing about all of it is a real twist in my thinking. Basically, my take is to sweat my ass off. I’ll keep doing that. But the biggest thought is this: There’s a thin man living inside you. Imagine if you could use that as a wellness approach.
