Step Away from the Policy Book

So much of what we call management consists in making it difficult for people to work. – Peter Drucker

Policies have unintended consequences. “Performance management” generates compliance, not brilliance. Jack Welch’s awful 70/30/10 plan made backstabbing sharks out of employees. Business casual dress codes made people wear Dockers.

Step away from the policy book. If your policy doesn’t make work better, don’t write it. As Albert Camus said, “Integrity has no need for rules.”
