Lady on a Bus with Broken Bag

That blurry picture is of a woman on the 38 bus this morning in Philadelphia. She got on with a Lacoste shopping bag tucked under her arm and the broken handle in one hand. The bag had ripped, she’d dropped her things in the slush, tucked them in the bag and got on the bus. She was flustered. I would be.

Then something very nice happened.

As another passenger was getting off the bus, he handed her a big set of plastic grocery store bags. He saw that the woman was upset and did something about it. She really appreciated it…and repacked her things in the bags right away. (You can see her doing it in the photo.)

I didn’t get a picture of the guy. But I remember the feeling of a good deed he did.

What do you do in your shop to encourage random acts of kindness? People who do that, with no expectation of an immediate payoff, are the kind of people I like to be around. I’d hire them.
