Women STILL Make Less Than Men? Or Do They?

Women STILL Make Less Than Men? Or Do They?

in Pay, Pay Transparency

It’s 2009. This New York Times story today called Why Is Her Paycheck Smaller? whipsaws me between aggravation and astonishment. If there’s pay inequality, it needs to end now.

I’m going to do a deep dive into the data. I want to understand what it means when they say the data aren’t adjusted for years of experience or the number of hours worked. If you read more into it, for example, the say that lumping all doctors together, women make more money. But then they say, well, women tend to get into general practice more while many more men are in the higher-paying surgical specialties. I want to see a head-to-head comparison.

What I’d like to see is a normalized study of pay that compares all the factors. It makes my blood boil to think there’s pay discrimination. On the other hand, it’s too simple to just not normalize the data to make it a “good” discrimination story.
